HOW GUITAR STRINGS ARE MADE?

What makes a guitar special?

The speciality of a guitar lies in its high range of musical notes that can be played to compose great music. Unlike other string operated instruments like violin, the guitar has a long neck which allows it to produce a variety of notes. However, guitars also have limitations as compared to other instruments like the piano where they have a long-range of notes. The music industries have seen a significant influence on the use of acoustic and electric guitars. Almost every music we hear nowadays are composed using guitars.

How guitar strings are made? Explained

Elements of a guitar:

Almost every genre of music we hear involves a guitar. One may wonder what ingredients make this beautiful instrument so versatile? I would mention the main components that make up a standard guitar:

  • Body
  • Neck
  • Truss rod
  • Pickups
  • Bridge
  • Nut
  • Headstock

Additional ingredients:

Some guitars are equipped with additional elements based on their unique use, these include:

  • Use of acrylic of electric bodies.
  • Use of graphite for acoustics guitars.

String, an essential component of guitar:

Strings are the cords bind together that produce a sounding effect for the guitar. They come in various forms which we would discuss later on. Generally, the guitar strings are made up of Nylon and steel alloy. The steel further comes in various types, and every manufacturing company keeps it as a “secret” for its distinctive features. It is the gravity of the guitar string material that significantly affect the tonal quality of a guitar.

Source of performance for string-based instruments:

Strings not only influence when used in guitars but also they help to create new ideas of music when played with different magnitude and style. Violins, Cello, Harp, Mandolin, Lute and many other melodic instruments we hear are because of the prime use of strings.

Choosing the right string for your guitar:

The right type of your string would determine the quality of sound your instrument will produce. Each string has its response and unique feel; therefore, the suitable string for your guitar acts as a strong point to your composition.

How are guitar strings made?

In the modern musical instrument manufacturing industry, the guitars come in variety based on the type of string fixed and the quality of wood used for the body. There are five main types of strings used in acoustic and electric guitars.

  • Steel and nickel strings (generally used in standard electric guitars)
  • Brass strings
  • Bronze strings
  • Nickel strings

Strings are further classified in subclasses based on the proportion of alloy used in them. Their manufacturing undergoes numerous procedures to bring the strings in the final shape for the instrument. A steel core wire is first examined under a scope and is magnified hundred times to find flaws in the material. The diameter of the wire is measured using digital micrometres just to make sure it fits in the particular guitar used. The wire undergoes various tension tests to measure its elasticity subsequently, a “Twist test” is applied upon the wire, which is essential when strings are given rotations in the guitar.

In case of a bronze string which is commonly used in standard guitars, the core wire is allowed to be wrapped around by the bronze wire using string winders. The similar procedure also applies if Nylon and Copper are used to wrap around the core wires. After numerous inspections, the string is ready to be fastened with the guitars.

Strings can deteriorate:

Strings have their performance limitations which may arise depending upon the handling and time duration of their use. Atmospheric conditions also affect the performance of the strings; for example, humidity in the air decline the quality of strings. Guitar strings become dull if their Nut is not replaced on the right time. The composition of strings includes the use of different metal which may rust if not protected from water.

Words of advice:

The strings are the most critical parts of a guitar. Therefore, they must be operated very carefully. The tuning keys should be well adjusted so that the strings do not break when playing the instrument considering the elasticity of the particular strings used. Restringing should be done when the guitarist feels the strings produce a dull sound. The guitar should be stored in a hard box where the strings do not receive unwanted force as they may break. The string comes with various oils which keep them lubricated and facilitate performance. These should be used depending upon how often strings are played.

Acoustic guitars experience more breakage in strings:

Strings in acoustic guitars are more liable to break than the ones used in metallic guitars because of the less elastic metal used in them. The most convenient way to eliminate this problem is by proper cleaning of the instrument.

String cleaning:

A soft fibre or silk cloth is always recommended to clean the strings or the neck of the guitar after you are done playing the instrument. Remember, every tool works best when delicacy and care for its ingredients are ensured.
