There is no specific time given to change the string; it depends on how much you use them. There are six strings on a guitar, which are EADGBe. It does not matter if a beginner or a professional guitar player is playing it.
ORIGIN OF STRINGS
The guitar strings were made from the gut (the gut is taken from the natural fibre of animal intestine) and installed on a guitar in 1265. The first guitars had four pairs of strings, but in 1551 the fifth pair of strings was added. In 1770, six cords came replacing all others.
How long do guitar strings last? Explained
MATERIAL
When guitar strings were first made, the material used was gut, taken from an animal, but afterward, nylon guitar strings were made, and then steel guitar strings used for rock music.
SIGNS TO CHANGE GUITAR STRINGS
- When you buy a new guitar, you might struggle to tune it, you might need to stretch it a few times to get it in the place, but after 2-3 months, if you can not attune it, that means its time to replace them.
- If your strings sound flat or and even you tune it again and it does not work, that means that the cord is torn out and used a lot.
- The oils from our finger get on the strings when we play it, and due to that, the color fades away, and it is a sign that they will break soon. Bronze color changes to copper color mostly.
- The cords should be flexible rather than being stiff. If they are hard, it means that means corrosion is happening unless you are playing heavy strings.
- Move your hand on the strings if they feel dirty, and there is friction between your hand and string; they are dull. They should be smooth and almost slippery. Change the cords if you are passionate about playing the guitar and making music.
WHY DO THEY BREAK?
- Guitar strings can break due to the sharp edges of the fret on guitars. Mostly, they break from the middle of the guitar if that is happening then notice where it is tearing.
- If the strings are breaking from the nut, that means there is some problem up top. When cleaning the guitar, make sure to clean that part to clean the dust or any other thing over there.
- If the string breaks from the tunning post, the tuning post has got burred edges due to which they are damaging. The solution for that is using an old wound string, probably a think one.
- They can also break when you are using standard cords and using them for higher tensions for which purpose they were not for, so it is better to use the right strings for the right job.
RULE OF THUMB
The rule of thumb is mostly for beginners as they start to learn the guitar, which is that they should change the strigs after every three months.
KINKS
Small kinks are for after the contact of fret wire, which is also of metal and the strings due to which they may sound dull or unpleasant.
WIPING STRINGS
Clean the strings with a thin cloth to remove dust and prevent it from corrosion. Thus, it can increase the lives of cords, and you do not need it to change very often.
CONDITIONING THE STRINGS
You can buy many products online or at the markets near you that are to condition your strings to prolong the lives of the cords.
WHICH STRING ARE BEST?
People love to use elixir cords as they have a protective coating over them, but it changes their tone. Some people may prefer the string that does not have a layer over it because they want the cords’ original sound.
- Elixir Coated Guitar Strings
- D’Addario Coated Guitar Strings
- Ernie Ball Coated Guitar Strings
- DR Coated Guitar Strings
These strings are more popular and used.
WHEN TO CHANGE STRINGS ACCORDING TO THE PLAYING TIME
- If you play only like five to fifteen minutes or 3-4 times a year, you often do not need to change guitar strings. Change them after a year.
- If you play 1-4 hours per week, change them after 5-8 months.
- If you play 5-14 hours a week, then change them 3-5 months.
- If you play 10-20 hours a week, change them after 1 to 2 months.
HOW TO MAKE THEM LAST LONGER
- Use the products that are used to condition the strings.
- Select a good brand of strings.
- Clean the strings often.
- Use a thick cloth to clean the strings.
- Wash your hand before using it because the oil can cause corrosion.
